Authorities in Ganderbal, Kashmir, have arrested a man in connection with a drug smuggling operation that involved a parcel containing significant quantities of cocaine. The package, intercepted on August 8, was addressed to a local poultry farmer, who was expecting poultry feed.

Police acted on a tip-off received earlier in August regarding a narcotics consignment destined for the Ganderbal district. This information was significant amid an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking in the region, which has included asset seizures and property demolitions for suspected traffickers.

When the parcel was intercepted at the Ganderbal post office and opened in the presence of a magistrate, it was found to contain four kilograms of cocaine, 80 grams of cannabis, and other psychotropic substances. The parcel had been sent from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The intended recipient told investigators that he had been contacted via WhatsApp by someone promising poultry feed samples. He also reported receiving a prior phone call from a Saudi Arabian number warning him against his recent marriage.

This information led investigators to Tariq Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Srinagar's Zainakote area, identified as the ex-boyfriend of the farmer's wife. Sofi was arrested on August 9. He admitted that a friend in Kanpur, identified as Areeb, had sent the parcel at his request. Sofi has been charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
