CJP Accuses Centre of Betrayal as Student Arrests Persist Despite Ceasefire

Agreement at Risk Following Mass Detentions
Months of tension reached a boiling point on July 27, 2026, as Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka accused the Union government of breaking a written pledge to freeze punitive measures against demonstrators. The CJP had only recently concluded a 36-day sit-in at Jantar Mantar on July 25, conditional on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a full amnesty for participants. However, reports of systematic police harassment and new arrests in multiple states have now pushed the group to the verge of relaunching their national protest.
Varying State Responses and Legal Escalations
Law enforcement actions across the country present a fragmented picture of the current crackdown. In Bihar, police initially detained 694 individuals following a July 25 protest, including 339 minors. While the state government later announced the withdrawal of all FIRs filed before 6 p.m. on July 26, other regions face heightened legal pressure. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has not yet mirrored this amnesty. Instead, Kolkata Police have increased total arrests to 16, with Adhikari identifying 70 additional suspects to be charged under the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026. This newly implemented statute allows for preventive detention of up to one year without legal counsel.

Legal Opposition and Deadlines
The CJP has set a deadline for Tuesday for the government to produce a formal, written copy of the initial agreement reached with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh. Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has pledged ₹1 crore to establish a legal defense fund and a digital platform to connect detained students with pro bono representation. Simultaneously, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has launched a dedicated helpline (9811867474) to assist those facing police pressure in Delhi and other states under BJP governance. The opposition maintains that the current wave of FIRs directly contradicts previous assurances given during high-level negotiations.
