Enforcement Measures Against Overcrowded School Transit

Chittoor district police activated a comprehensive enforcement campaign on Wednesday to curb the dangerous practice of overloading vehicles used for student transportation. Traffic units, under the direction of Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Dudi, are now conducting systematic inspections throughout the region to identify and penalize violators of road safety protocols.

The operation specifically targets private autorickshaws and vans performing daily school runs. During the initial phase of the drive, Circle-Inspector Nitya Babu led a team that intercepted and counselled drivers who exceeded permitted passenger counts. Authorities warned these operators that prioritizing profit over safety places the lives of young passengers at significant risk.

Legal Consequences and Regulatory Compliance

Superintendent Dudi emphasized that transporting students beyond a vehicle's authorized seating capacity constitutes a direct violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. The police department has outlined a tiered enforcement strategy to address these infractions:

• Monetary Penalties: Fines will be issued for initial breaches of capacity regulations.
• Criminal Litigation: Registration of formal cases against operators who persist in unsafe practices.
• Administrative Sanctions: Implementation of penal measures against repeat or willful offenders to ensure long-term compliance.

The Superintendent stated that student safety remains a non-negotiable priority for his department. Beyond police monitoring, the SP urged parents to inspect the legality and safety standards of the transport services they hire. The public is further encouraged to notify law enforcement immediately upon witnessing instances of overloading or other hazardous transportation behaviors in the district.
