Kerala Allocates 90 Additional Acres for BrahMos Aerospace Expansion
The Kerala Cabinet has authorized a total of 180 acres for a new BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd facility. This expansion bolsters the region's defense production capabilities and integrates into a broader economic corridor.
Expanding the Strategic Footprint in Thiruvananthapuram
The Kerala Government has finalized the transfer of an additional 90 acres to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This decision, confirmed during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, completes the 180-acre land requirement for a new BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (BATL) facility. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan explained that this secondary land release was essential to secure final DRDO approvals for the project.
Construction of the new unit follows a December 2025 Supreme Court ruling that permitted the transfer of land from the Nettukaltheri open prison complex. This site will serve as BATL’s second hub in the district, supplementing its existing operations at Chakka. The facility will prioritize the manufacturing of sophisticated missiles and strategic hardware components.
Evolution from Keltec to Global Defense Supplier
BATL originated in 2007 when the Indo-Russian joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL), acquired the state-owned Kerala Hi-Tech Industries Ltd (Keltec). Since its inception, the company has evolved into a specialized manufacturer providing critical systems for several major entities:
- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
- Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)
- BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL)
Integration into the Southern Kerala Economic Corridor
The facility represents a fundamental component of the state's industrial policy. While previous administrations proposed a 'Defence Corridor' to link regional space and research centers, the current government has integrated these assets into the 'Southern Kerala Economic Corridor.' This initiative aims to consolidate Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha into a unified economic zone defined as a region of national strategic importance. By expanding BATL’s footprint, the state seeks to strengthen the synergy between aerospace and defense industries in the district.
