Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar dismissed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s call to lower the minimum age for legislative candidates from 25 to 21. Speaking at Shamshabad Airport on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the BJP leader characterized the proposal as hollow without immediate action at the state level. He argued that if the Chief Minister truly intends to empower young citizens, he should start by appointing individuals aged between 21 and 30 to his own cabinet rather than lobbying for nationwide constitutional shifts.

Vacant Portfolios as a Test Case

The Minister highlighted specific opportunities for the state government to demonstrate its sincerity regarding youth leadership. With the Home, Education, and Municipal Administration portfolios currently unassigned, Kumar suggested these departments serve as the ideal entry point for younger representatives. He presented a clear set of demands to test the Chief Minister’s resolve:

• Immediate induction of Gen Z leaders into the State Cabinet.
• Mandatory resignations of sitting Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) to allow younger replacements.
• Allocation of high-stakes administrative portfolios to new-generation politicians.

Critique of Congress Seniority Culture

Kumar further targeted the Congress party’s historical approach to youth wings and leadership roles. He questioned whether the party intended to continue its pattern of promoting veteran figures as face-savers for younger demographics. By alleging that the Congress frequently installs elderly leaders in positions designated for youth advancement, Kumar framed the Chief Minister’s latest proposal as a distraction from internal party dynamics. The Union Minister emphasized that legislative changes are secondary to the actual distribution of executive power in the present political climate.
