Nainar Nagenthran, president of the BJP State unit, issued a sharp rebuke on Monday against Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Justice Vanni Arasu. The controversy centers on a recent school function where National Cadet Corps (NCC) members delivered their customary salute. According to Nagenthran, Arasu misinterpreted the cadets' exclamation of “Jai Hind, Sriman!” as the religious and political slogan “Jai Sriram!”
Allegations of Religious Bias
Nagenthran argues that this linguistic error led the Minister to voice disparaging remarks. The BJP leader stated that these comments revealed a deep-seated hostility toward Hinduism and the BJP. Beyond the phonetic confusion, Nagenthran asserted that the Minister demonstrated a lack of institutional knowledge by failing to differentiate between the National Cadet Corps and the Scout movement. The clash highlights ongoing tensions regarding secularism and religious expression in the state's educational institutions.
Demands for Executive Oversight
The BJP leadership has now directed its attention toward the head of the state government. Nagenthran formally called upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to take the following actions:
- Intervene directly to prevent cabinet members from making remarks perceived as anti-Hindu.
- Ensure that school environments remain spaces focused on equality and fraternity.
- Restrain inflammatory rhetoric involving students and youth organizations.
