Bengaluru Authorities Impound 70 Private Motorcycles in Commercial Enforcement Drive

On August 6, the Karnataka Transport Department executed a significant enforcement operation across the capital, targeting the unauthorized commercial use of private motorcycles. During the city-wide sweep, inspectors scrutinized 220 two-wheelers to verify compliance with transport laws. The investigation resulted in 71 cases being filed and the physical seizure of 70 vehicles found to be operating in violation of their registration status.

Breakdown by Regional Transport Office

Data released by the department indicates that the Bengaluru East RTO saw the most intensive activity. In that jurisdiction alone, officials inspected 57 vehicles, leading to 19 cases and 19 seizures. Other regions also reported significant enforcement figures:

• Electronic City: 11 cases booked and 10 vehicles impounded.
• Bengaluru Central: 10 motorcycles seized.
• Additional Jurisdictions: Enforcement actions occurred in Chandapura, K.R. Puram, Yelahanka, Devanahalli, Jnanabharathi, and the South and North RTO districts.

Labor Pressures and Policy Violation

The core of the legal violation centers on the use of non-transport category vehicles for commercial taxi services. Under current regulations, these private vehicles are prohibited from performing transport work. This specific crackdown follows high-level discussions between the Transport Department and the Karnataka App-Based Workers Union (KAWU). The union had previously issued a strike warning, demanding that the government address the proliferation of illegal bike taxis to protect the interests of registered transport workers.
