A recent statement in the Rajya Sabha by Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, has sparked significant friction within the political ranks. Choudhary remarked that the Supreme Court's ruling on the Cauvery dispute contains no explicit requirement for Karnataka to seek approval from neighboring states before initiating construction along the river. This assertion directly conflicts with a parliamentary statement issued by the same ministry on February 16, 2018, which emphasized different regulatory constraints.

K. Annamalai, a former IPS officer with deep ties to the region, characterized this shift as a potential calculated move to gain favor in Karnataka. He noted several points of contention regarding the proposed Mekedatu dam:
