Andhra Pradesh Proposes Extensive Buddhist Tourism Circuit to Central Government

Strategic Expansion of Heritage Tourism

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Cinematography, Kandula Durgesh, announced on Wednesday that the state government has petitioned Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to establish a dedicated Buddhist circuit. The proposal seeks to leverage the region's historical significance to attract global travelers and religious pilgrims. During an address at the inauguration of the newly constructed Buddha Vihar in Undrajavaram mandal, East Godavari district, Durgesh confirmed that the central government has received a detailed appraisal of the project.

Connecting Historic Landmarks

The proposed development plan involves a geographical corridor spanning multiple districts, including Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, NTR, and Guntur. The circuit intends to unite several significant archaeological and spiritual sites, such as:

• Aadurru: Located in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, serving as a primary node in the circuit.
• Ghantasala and Amaravati: Key historical centers within the former Krishna district.

By integrating these locations, the state government intends to upgrade regional infrastructure and establish better transportation links. Durgesh emphasized that federal backing is essential for the logistics and connectivity improvements required to sustain increased tourism traffic.

International Clerical Engagement

The announcement coincided with a high-level meeting between state officials and members of the Buddhist clergy. Minister Durgesh participated in special prayers at the Maitreya Buddha Vihar and held consultations with prominent monks, including Bante Analayo and Dr. Bodhagama Chandima Nayake Theero of Sri Lanka. These discussions focused on the cultural preservation aspect of the tourism initiative as Andhra Pradesh seeks to position itself as a major hub for Buddhist study and pilgrimage.
