Andhra Pradesh Partners with Khan Academy to Deploy AI Instruction in Girls' Schools
State educational agency Samagra Shiksha has inked a deal to bring advanced digital tools and AI assistants to 352 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. The initiative focuses on enhancing STEM instruction through teacher mentorship and personalized learning platforms.
Strategic Integration of AI in State Education
Samagra Shiksha has formalised a partnership with Khan Academy India to modernize classroom instruction across 352 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Andhra Pradesh. This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed at the state project office in Vijayawada, introduces Khanmigo—an artificial intelligence-driven teaching assistant—to the state's educational framework. Teachers will utilize this technology at no cost to access advanced content and automated instructional aids.
Phased Training for STEM Educators
State Project Director B. Srinivasa Rao confirmed that the program, supported by UNICEF, targets Intermediate-level educators specializing in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. The rollout follows a structured, multi-tier methodology:
- Selection of Mentors: High-performing subject experts will be identified as Teacher Mentors to spearhead the pedagogical shift.
- Intensive Capacity Building: These mentors will undergo initial rigorous training on digital integration.
- State-wide Scaling: The training will subsequently extend to all remaining subject teachers, focusing on the practical application of Khan Academy’s science and math resources.
Collaborative Framework and Goals
The agreement was finalized in the presence of representatives from both the public and private sectors. Key attendees included Shubhra Mittal, Head of Government Partnerships for Khan Academy India, and UNICEF representative Sheshagiri Madhusudan. Other state officials present were Additional State Project Director M.R. Prasanna Kumar and KGBV Secretary D. Devananda Reddy.
Founded by Sal Khan, the non-profit organization works with several major entities in India, such as Tata Trusts and the SBI Foundation, to provide multilingual resources. This specific state initiative focuses on establishing a personalized learning environment. By allowing students to progress through material at an individualized speed, the government aims to improve measurable learning outcomes through high-quality, tech-enabled pedagogy.
