Andhra Pradesh Issues Coastal High Alert as Bay of Bengal Depression Intensifies
State authorities have banned all maritime activities along the northern coastline due to a strengthening weather system. Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu ordered immediate compliance to prevent casualties during the heavy rainfall event.
Maritime Operations Halted Amid Severe Weather Warning
The Andhra Pradesh government enforced a maritime lockdown on Monday, July 27, 2026, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal showed signs of strengthening into a severe weather system. Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu directed all fishermen along the north Andhra coast to remain ashore, emphasizing that the administration’s primary focus is preventing the loss of life at sea. The Minister urged vessel operators to put their families first and cooperate with the state mandate until the advisory is officially rescinded on Tuesday.
Disaster management officials have extended the warning to residents in low-lying coastal zones, instructing them to maintain high vigilance. For any authorized future deployment, the government mandates that boat owners verify the functionality of all onboard transponders and communication equipment before departing from harbors.
Rainfall Distribution and Regional Impact
While the depression continues to develop, precipitation has primarily targeted the northern districts. Data collected from 2,214 monitoring stations between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Monday revealed the following rainfall benchmarks:
- Payakaraopeta (Anakapalli) and Salur (Parvathipuram Manyam): 15.5 mm each.
- Ramaraja Palem (Alluri Sitharama Raju): 15 mm.
- Pedamerangi (Parvathipuram Manyam): 11.75 mm.
Minor rainfall also reached Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Kakinada, Eluru, and Krishna districts. Conversely, the Rayalaseema region remained largely dry during this period, recording little to no measurable precipitation.
Thermal Extremes and Pre-emptive Safety Measures
Despite the storm threat and localized rain, parts of the state experienced significant heat. Throvagunta in Prakasam district recorded the highest temperature at 39.5 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Gudur in SPSR Nellore at 39.1 degrees. In contrast, the lowest temperature was noted at Kilagada in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, dropping to 23.1 degrees Celsius. State machinery remains active to mitigate risks as the depression evolves, with local officials positioned to execute emergency protocols if the weather system deteriorates further.
