Emergency Agricultural Shift in Nandyal

As meteorological reports forecast below-normal rainfall and prolonged dry spells, Nandyal District Collector Rajakumari Ganiya has ordered an immediate pivot in local farming strategies. During a review meeting on Monday, July 27, 2026, the Collector emphasized that the El Nino phenomenon poses a significant threat to the current agricultural season. Even when rain does arrive, officials expect high temperatures and dry conditions to persist for up to 20 consecutive days.

Alternative Crop Mandates and Resource Management

The administration has directed officials from agricultural and allied departments to launch a widespread awareness campaign. The primary objective is to discourage the cultivation of water-heavy crops such as paddy and maize. With water levels at the Srisailam reservoir already reaching concerning lows, the district is prioritizing moisture-efficient agriculture.

Officials are promoting the following low-water alternatives:

• Red gram (pigeon pea) and Black gram
• Green gram and Sorghum (jowar)
• Pearl millet (bajra) and Foxtail millet
• Castor

The strategy extends beyond crop yields. Ganiya warned that a further drop in groundwater levels could jeopardize the supply of drinking water, livestock hydration, and the availability of green fodder. Residents and farmers are urged to exercise extreme caution with existing water reserves.

Insurance Deadlines and Regional Coordination

To mitigate financial risks for the farming community, the Collector set a firm deadline of July 31 for crop insurance enrollment. Agriculture department personnel must now conduct targeted campaigns to ensure total coverage for eligible farmers. Coordination efforts are echoed in neighboring Anantapur, where Collector O. Anand has instructed departments to harmonize their response to the El Nino threat through a structured, multi-agency approach.
