As heavy monsoon rains submerged Dholka, Gujarat, drone technology emerged as a vital tool for relief workers. Mehsana-based startup Prime UAV deployed specialized drones to locate stranded residents and deliver supplies where boats and tractors could not reach.

Recent monsoon cycles in Gujarat transformed familiar streets into impassable waterways, isolating neighborhoods and forcing residents to seek refuge on rooftops and within school buildings. In response to the crisis in Dholka, the emergency response team from Prime UAV mobilized within 30 minutes of receiving distress reports. Working alongside local authorities, the logistics of the operation involved utilizing tractors and boats to approach flooded zones, followed by launching unmanned aerial vehicles to bridge the final gap in visibility and access.
Technical Support for Ground Teams
The startup, established in 2019 by Pradip Patel and Hiten Patel, utilized GPS-enabled drones to provide continuous aerial intelligence. While traditional rescue operations often stall after sunset, these drones maintained surveillance through the night, offering real-time feeds that allowed responders to map safer navigation routes. Key technical contributions included:
- Real-time situational awareness: Live footage helped personnel rank rescue priorities based on the severity of flooding in specific pockets.
- Payload delivery: Custom systems transported necessary supplies to families cut off from both road and watercraft access.

This deployment follows a pattern of public service for the Mehsana-based company. Recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the firm previously pivoted its commercial mapping and agricultural technology to assist during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 locust swarms. CEO Pradip Patel noted that these past experiences refined the team’s ability to act under pressure, emphasizing that the primary value of the technology lies in its capacity to serve society during environmental emergencies.
