Designed to survive extreme cyclones, the Bhogapuram terminal fuses high-tensile engineering with North Andhra cultural motifs. This aviation hub prioritizes structural resilience following the devastating impact of Cyclone Hudhud on regional infrastructure.

Engineered for the Eye of the Storm
The architectural blueprint of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram is a direct response to the havoc of October 12, 2014. On that day, Cyclone Hudhud hammered the coast with 185 kmph winds, stripping the roof off the existing Visakhapatnam terminal and destroying its radar systems. To prevent a recurrence, GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited has over-engineered the new facility to withstand wind speeds of up to 275 kmph and rainfall reaching 27 centimeters.
This threshold significantly exceeds the standard Indian building code for high-wind zones, which typically accounts for 198 kmph. A defining feature of this resilience is the 21-meter seamless glass facade. Rajan Govind, Director of BES Consultants, noted in WFM Media that the glazing manages wind loads between 5.5 and 5.75 kilopascals. By utilizing specialized bolt-and-nut systems and flexible top connections, engineers ensured the roof can shift during a gale without shattering the expansive glass envelope.
Marine Aesthetics and Vertical Gardens
From an aerial perspective, the terminal adopts an organic, piscine silhouette. The silver shell of the roof is ribbed into bays resembling the gill slits of a ray, while the layout places check-in services in the 'belly' and boarding gates in the 'tail.' This maritime theme extends to the interior ornamentation. Beneath an oval skylight hangs a collection of approximately 27 discs mounted at varying heights. These radial-ribbed structures, finished in shades of rose, slate, and cream, mimic an inverted version of Singapore’s famous supertree grove, filtering natural light into the hall like indoor parasols.
Landscaping at the site echoes the 'terminal in a garden' concept pioneered at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda Airport. At Bhogapuram, garden beds are carved in loops across the forecourt, mirroring the aerodynamic curves of the terminal roof. While the outdoor trees remain in their sapling stage, indoor greenery is integrated via potted displays throughout the passenger areas.
Integrating Regional Identity
Cultural heritage is woven into the functional spaces of the airport through the use of muggulu motifs—traditional floor patterns common in Andhra households. These designs are executed with varying scales and materials:
- Arrivals Level: Massive white stone patterns are inlaid into dark granite, creating a visual that is only fully discernible from the balconies above.
- Ceilings: Brass light channels trace the stepped turns of traditional folk art.
- Departures Hall: Dynamic LED bands cycle through imagery of iconic regional architecture, including the gopurams of Tirupati and Simhachalam.
The facility is currently scaled to accommodate nearly 40 million passengers every year, serving as a high-capacity gateway that marries traditional North Andhra craftsmanship with defensive modern engineering.
