Vagabond Tiger Returns to East Godavari After Crossing State Lines
The male tiger known as Explorer has resurfaced in the Gopalapuram mandal after a multi-week journey across the Godavari river. Wildlife officials are monitoring the predator as it navigates agricultural zones near the Papikonda National Park.
Tracking the Predator's Path
The tiger designated as Explorer has returned to the East Godavari district, appearing in the dense forest stretches and agricultural lands of Gopalapuram mandal. Over the last 21 days, the animal traversed the Papikonda Hill Range and the border regions of Telangana. To reach its current location, the tiger swam across the Godavari river, marking its re-entry into the vicinity of Papikonda National Park (PNP).
Forest Department Surveillance
Forest Officer B. Prabhakar Rao confirmed that a specialized force is currently managing the situation. The deployment includes:
- Three dedicated tracking teams.
- A 30-member support group from the forest department.
- Continuous monitoring of coconut and oil palm plantations where the tiger was spotted over the last 48 hours.
Officials report that the tiger has avoided human settlements and has not attacked livestock in at least seven days. The predator is currently maintaining a significant distance from populated areas.
A History of Long-Distance Migration
This specific tiger originates from the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, which it departed in December 2025. Its recent history in East Godavari involves a high-profile intervention; authorities tranquilized the animal at Kurmapuram village on February 6. Following this capture, it was released into the PNP on February 14, though its latest movements suggest a preference for the wider riparian corridors of the Godavari.
