This protest follows a heated dispute over the leadership of the UN human rights office. On Friday, the United States joined a small group of dissenters, including Russia and North Korea, to vote against a second term for Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The reappointment of Turk eventually passed with support from 144 member states, while 10 countries voted against and 13 abstained. The fallout became personal after France’s UN Mission in Geneva stated that the United States had lost its status as a leader in human rights advocacy. US Ambassador Mike Waltz responded by accusing France of backing an official who allegedly ignores the actions of oppressive regimes while lecturing democratic nations.

Bartos stated that Washington would move to reassess its current participation, engagement, and financial contributions to the organization.
Senior US official Dan Negrea confirmed that the delegation intends to continue such protests until France retracts what he described as "condescending and disrespectful rhetoric." Conversely, French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont defended Turk, calling him a "voice of conscience" who has maintained strict impartiality. Turk has previously drawn criticism from various global powers for his assessments of the conflict in Ukraine and Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
