Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has officially sanctioned a new probe into the February protest at Kannur railway station involving Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists and former Health Minister Veena George. The decision stems from a petition filed by arrested KSU members who claim the previous government charged them with attempted murder and armed assault without factual basis. The Home Minister's office is currently weighing two options: establishing a Special Investigation Team led by a Superintendent of Police or transferring the case to the State Police Crime Branch.

A Catalyst for Inter-Party Conflict

The original incident, occurring toward the end of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) tenure, sparked physical confrontations between CPI(M) and Congress supporters across multiple districts. At the time, Ms. George was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Kannur District Hospital with reported soft tissue injuries to her neck and hand. While television footage captured the encounter, political interpretations of the visuals varied wildly between the two major factions.

• CPI(M) Allegations: Party leaders, including M.V. Govindan and Binoy Viswam, characterized the event as a premeditated mob attack and a Congress-led conspiracy to destabilize the state before the 2026 elections.
• UDF Defense: Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, serving as Opposition Leader at the time, dismissed the event as political theater. He argued that police cordons made physical contact impossible and that Ms. George's ICU admission was a calculated move to shift the public narrative away from LDF policy failures.

Legal Challenges and Political Fallout

Before the UDF took power, KSU workers petitioned the High Court to drop the charges, asserting that the state had acted with high-handedness. They maintained that news footage exonerates them of the grievous assault allegations. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had previously used the hospital visit to Ms. George to put the Congress on the defensive, a tactic the current administration now views as part of a larger pattern of political spite.
