Long-Duration Science Mission Concludes via Soyuz Landing
A 241-day odyssey in low Earth orbit ended on Sunday, July 26, when the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft landed southeast of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan. NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev reached the surface at 5:27 a.m. CDT after undocking from the International Space Station (ISS) three hours earlier. This mission saw the crew travel approximately 102 million miles while completing 3,856 orbits of the planet.
The return marks the first spaceflight for both Williams and Mikaev, while Kud-Sverchkov completed his second tour of duty. Following an initial medical assessment at the landing zone, the trio will relocate via helicopter to Karaganda. From there, Williams will board a NASA plane for a direct flight to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Advancing Oncology and Orbital Engineering
During his tenure on the ISS, Williams focused on high-stakes scientific research that utilizes the unique environment of microgravity. His efforts were largely dedicated to experiments that may lead to breakthroughs in cancer therapy and the optimization of semiconductor materials used in high-performance electronics.
Maintenance was also a significant priority. Williams performed two spacewalks to ensure the facility remained operational for its international occupants. These excursions involved:
