Thousands Gather for Soundararaja Perumal Temple Car Procession in Thadikombu
Devotees thronged the streets of Dindigul district for the annual car festival, a midpoint of the Adi celebrations. The event featured a grand procession of the deities following the hosting of the holy flag earlier this month.
Ceremonial Procession Draws Large Crowds
The annual car festival at the Soundararaja Perumal Temple in Thadikombu reached its peak on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. As a central component of the 'Adi' religious season, the event saw a massive turnout of devotees in Dindigul district. The ceremonial chariot, or ther, carried the idols of Lord Soundararaja Perumal alongside Goddess Soundaravalli Thayar and Andal through the designated traditional routes.
Milestones of the ‘Adi’ Calendar
This procession is one of several rituals scheduled for the month. The festivities launched on July 21 with a formal flag-hosting ceremony. Since then, the temple has observed various spiritual milestones, including:
- July 27: The performance of the celestial wedding ritual.
- July 29: The temple car procession through town.
- July 30: The scheduled Theerthavari ceremony.
- July 31: The Teppa Utsavam, commonly known as the float festival, which concludes the current cycle.
Administrative and Security Oversight
Dindigul Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar attended the proceedings to monitor safety and crowd management. Representatives from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department also joined the local community to observe the rituals and ensure the smooth movement of the heavy wooden chariot through the temple streets.
