Tata Sons Shifts Focus to Chips and AI as Annual Profits Surpass ₹31,000 Crore
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has aligned the group's future with semiconductors and aviation following a 21.8% profit surge. Despite a major cyberattack at JLR and losses in digital retail, the conglomerate reported aggregate revenues exceeding ₹16 lakh crore.

Strategic Pivot Toward Advanced Technologies
Tata Sons is prioritizing a long-term transition into semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. In the FY26 Annual Report, Chairman N. Chandrasekaran defined AI as a civilizational shift, suggesting that enterprise technology firms are best positioned to navigate this transition. He noted that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) maintains a distinct edge in this space due to its deep integration with legacy client systems. While Indian IT faces broader disruption fears, Tata’s non-TCS entities delivered massive shareholder returns of 575%, significantly outpacing the Nifty 50's 253% return rate.
Electronics and Semiconductor Infrastructure
Tata Electronics has emerged as a primary growth driver, recording ₹1.31 lakh crore in revenue to become the group's fourth-largest entity. The division reached operating profit breakeven while initiating the construction of India's first high-volume semiconductor fabrication facility in Gujarat. This expansion includes indigenous chip packaging and technology development aimed at domestic self-reliance. Similarly, the group is scaling its battery manufacturing through Agratas and expanding its defense portfolio to include drones, radar systems, and military aircraft.
Volatility in Aviation and Digital Segments
The transformation of Air India remains a decade-long project. Despite achieving the nation’s top on-time performance in June 2026 and swinging its Net Promoter Score from -35 to +42, the airline faced a turbulent year. Chandrasekaran cited fuel volatility, currency shifts, and the AI171 crash as significant hurdles. Meanwhile, Tata Digital reported a loss of ₹4,974 crore. To counter this, the group intends to restructure the Tata Neu platform around financial services, insurance, and loyalty programs, having already reached a GMV of ₹46,515 crore.
Financial Performance and Group Resilience
The holding company reported a revenue increase of 9.1% to ₹42,367 crore, while post-tax profits reached ₹31,961 crore. This led the Board to recommend a final dividend of ₹1,10,717 per share. On a wider scale, the Tata Group's aggregate revenue hit ₹16,24,030 crore, with profits jumping 51.9% to ₹1,70,525 crore. These figures represent a fivefold increase in profits compared to FY20 levels. However, internal challenges persisted, including a five-week production halt at Jaguar Land Rover following a second-quarter cyberattack.
- Aggregate Group Revenue: ₹16.24 lakh crore (up 7.8%)
- Holding Company Profit: ₹31,961 crore (up 21.8%)
- Total Shareholder Returns: 287% (Group aggregate)
- Tata Digital GMV: ₹46,515 crore
