Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Hits Record ₹411 Crore Profit in First Quarter
The Thoothukudi-based lender achieved its highest-ever quarterly net profit, crossing the ₹400 crore threshold for the first time. Net Interest Income climbed by 32.01% as the bank eyes future expansion into international markets.

Record-Breaking Financial Performance
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Ltd (TMB) reached a significant historical milestone during the first quarter ending June 2026. The bank reported a net profit of ₹411.51 crore, a 34.97% surge compared to the ₹304.89 crore earned during the same period the previous year. Managing Director and CEO Salee S Nair noted that this performance represents the first instance of the lender surpassing the ₹400 crore profit level in its history.
Yields and Asset Growth
Growth in core lending activities drove the bottom line, with Net Interest Income rising to ₹765.08 crore from ₹579.55 crore, marking a 32.01% year-on-year increase. Efficiency in lending also improved, as the Net Interest Margin (NIM) climbed 45 basis points to 4.29%, up from 3.84% a year prior. The bank's balance sheet showed robust expansion across both sides of the ledger:
- Total Deposits: Increased by 19.71% to reach ₹64,409 crore.
- Total Advances: Grew by 27.01% to hit ₹57,306 crore.
Strategic Direction and Global Ambitions
The Thoothukudi-headquartered institution intends to focus its FY27 strategy on retail, MSME, and agricultural sectors. Nair highlighted that the bank is prioritizing digital investment and operational efficiency to improve customer engagement. While the lender currently operates exclusively within India, management is evaluating entry into international territories. Potential expansion targets include Singapore, Malaysia, and West Asia, specifically Dubai, though these plans remain aimed at future development cycles.
