Authorities in Sunsari, a vital commercial artery connecting southeastern Nepal to Bihar, India, have expanded and extended emergency curfew measures. This decision follows a violent confrontation on Sunday, July 26, that escalated into a lethal riot in the Kaptangunj region.
Under the current mandate, all public gatherings, demonstrations, and civilian movements are prohibited until further notice. The security measures now encompass:
- Sections of the East-West Highway within Itahari Sub-metropolitan City (Wards 16 and 17).
- Portions of the East-West Highway in Ramdhuni Municipality (Wards 1 and 5).
- The entire administrative territories of Inaruwa, Duhabi, and Bhokraha Narsingh.
- Koshi, Gadhi, Devangunj, Harihar, and Barju Rural Municipalities.
Prime Minister Pledges Accountability for Police Action
Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the crisis on Tuesday, July 28, expressing deep sorrow over a fatality resulting from security forces opening fire. During the clash between two religious factions, police discharged weapons to disperse the crowd, leading to one death and injuries to over a dozen individuals, including law enforcement personnel.
