Service Quality Slump for Karnataka Tier-II Hubs in Latest AAI Customer Index
The Airport Authority of India's Round-I 2026 report reveals a significant decline in traveler satisfaction at several regional hubs. Mysuru airport suffered the most substantial fall, plummeting to nearly the bottom of the national performance list.
Regional Infrastructure and Passenger Sentiment Trends
Data from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) Customer Satisfaction Index for the first half of 2026 indicates a downward trend for two of Karnataka's four Tier-II operational hubs. The analysis, which compared Round-I 2026 data against Round-II 2025 across 60 AAI-managed facilities, highlights shifting public perception regarding service delivery and facility management. While some regions managed to maintain their standing, others saw their national rankings compromised by declining scores.
Mysuru and Hubballi Witness Volatility
The Mysuru airport experienced the most severe contraction in public approval. Previously holding the 15th position with a score of 4.81, the facility fell to 34th place among 35 operational airports after its score sank to 4.18. Similarly, the Hubballi airport slipped from fourth to sixth place nationally. Although its score adjustment was marginal—dropping to 4.93 from a previous 4.96—the shift reflects the competitive pressure from other regional hubs.
Conversely, the Belagavi airport improved its standing despite static performance. It moved from 11th to 9th place while maintaining a consistent score of 4.89 points. The Kalaburgi airport re-entered the rankings at 22nd place with a 4.72 score, following the restoration of flight services on June 10. The facility had been excluded from prior surveys due to a flight suspension by Star Air that began on October 15, 2025.
Metrics Governing the National Rankings
The AAI index evaluates 33 distinct performance indicators to determine final rankings. These include technical efficiency and passenger comfort levels. The primary evaluation areas consist of:
- Ground transportation infrastructure and parking accessibility.
- Baggage cart availability and check-in queue management.
- Personnel efficiency, courtesy, and the rigor of security screenings.
- Internet connectivity, waiting area comfort, and the value of catering services.
- Five specific metrics dedicated to sanitation and hygiene standards.
On a national scale, Khajuraho secured the top position, followed by Aurangabad and Madurai. The survey serves as a benchmarking tool for operational efficiency in the country's expanding aviation sector.
