Scattered rains renew farmers’ hope for a better yield in Yadgir district

Yadgir district, which had registered a deficit rainfall, has got some hopes back for a good yield after experiencing scattered rains a couple of days back.

The district has recorded 2,41,682 hectares of sowing till Friday, against its targeted area of 4,01,869 for the Kharif season.

Out of the 84,999 hectares, the redgram covered 48,697 ( 60.14%) hectares, the greengram covered 9,153 hectares against the targeted area of 13,770 hectares, while the cotton was sown on 1,79,410 hectares against the targeted area of 2,02,452 hectares.

In the wake of deficit rainfall this monsoon, crops like cotton, redgram and greengram had begun to wither due to a shortage of rain and moisture. The wait by the farmers for a good spell of rain seems to have ended with the scattered rains for a couple of days.

Farmer Vijay Gulgi is now a bit relieved that they have received scattered rainfall which they believe is going to help the standing crops.

After paddy, cotton is the second largest grown crop in the district and the farmers are dependent on water that is made available through irrigation. However, considering the drought condition, district administration had announced that the water available at Basavasagar Reservoir should be used only for human and animal drinking purposes and not for irrigation.

Farmers like Chandrashekhar Gouda Bilwar, who cultivate cotton, are dependent on the canal water made available through Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Limited (KBJNL). “But because of dry spell, the crops started withering after the first round of weed-removing activities was completed. The recent scattered rains somehow help the withering crops. Now, I am confident again about getting a good yield instead of expected crop loss,” he said.

According to data, the district has suffered a 24% rain deficit that was recorded from June 1 to July 24.
