Regional Stability Drives Currency Strength

The Indian rupee continued its rally on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, gaining 35 paise to trade at 95.64 against the U.S. dollar during the early interbank session. This gain follows an aggressive 54-paise appreciation on Monday and a 20-paise rise the previous Friday. The current upward trajectory stems from a combination of cooling Middle Eastern tensions and a softening global dollar index.

Energy Markets and Geopolitical Shift

Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped 1.43% to reach $87.10 per barrel. This decline correlates with a three-day pause in direct hostilities between the U.S. and Iran. While U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Iran sought discussions following intense economic and military pressure, Iranian officials denied the existence of direct negotiations. However, the observable progress by mediators has eased risk premiums in the energy sector, directly benefiting the rupee.

Equity Markets and Capital Flows

Domestic indices maintained a positive bias, with the Sensex inching up 14.66 points to 76,850.44 and the Nifty climbing 27.10 points to 24,023.45. Despite the currency appreciation, foreign institutional investors remained cautious, offloading roughly Rs 1,688.23 crore in equities during the preceding session on Monday. Analysts note that while capital outflows persist, the cheaper cost of oil imports predominantly dictates the rupee's current resilience.
