Sabol Co-Works, a facility established roughly one year ago, challenges traditional corporate rigidity through its proprietary "WOCABO" framework—a portmanteau representing work, café, and boardgames. Managing Director Karthic Kumaran, a 26-year-old professional tennis player, operates the space alongside his mother, Subashini Ramesh, catering to a diverse clientele ranging from solo freelancers to established multinational entities.

Functional Design and Professional Infrastructure

The facility currently accommodates 54 desks and serves as the operational base for 15 multinational corporations and startups. Moving away from the claustrophobic aesthetics of legacy cubicles, the design prioritizes natural light and open ventilation. The ground floor features versatile indoor and outdoor meeting rooms, which are frequently utilized by corporate clients for high-stakes interviews, Zoom sessions, and even podcast recordings. These rooms are available for reservation at an hourly rate of ₹150.

A standout item is the signature "cookie milk"—a chilled beverage blending soaked cookies and milk developed by Subashini Ramesh. The café's physical layout utilizes low benches and tables, facilitating a transition from intensive tasks to casual networking.

Strategic Play as a Stress Reducer

Central to the Sabol identity is an expansive library of over 300 boardgames, including complex titles such as Blood on the Clocktower, Catan, Root, Merchant of The Dark Road, and Brass: Birmingham. Kumaran, an expert in current gaming trends, facilitates community gaming sessions every weekend that often last four hours or more. The lounge space serves as both a meeting area and a venue for community tournaments, fostering social connections between strangers and multi-generational family groups alike.

A Legacy of Innovation

The concept marks a modern evolution of a business model pioneered by Karthic’s father and mentor, M Ramesh. In 1990, Ramesh operated the Sabol Business Centre in RS Puram, providing essential telephone infrastructure to early clients like TCS and IFB. While that iteration eventually phased out with the advent of mobile technology, the new Tatabad location adapts the elder Ramesh’s vision for the post-digital era, emphasizing physical interaction and mental wellness as the new essential commodities of the workspace.
