Ranipet Schools Launch Weekly Green Initiative to Instil Environmental Guardianship

Starting July 27, approximately 2,000 educational institutions across Ranipet district began a new environmental mandate requiring students to dedicate 20 minutes every Monday to campus forestry. The initiative, conceptualized by District Collector N. Priya, covers 900 public schools and 1,100 private institutions, ranging from primary levels to class XII.

Hands-on Conservation and Education

Chief Educational Officer M. Mohana noted that the program moves beyond traditional classroom theory. During these sessions, students perform various maintenance tasks including:

• Planting new saplings to increase campus canopy.
• Manual watering and clearing dry debris from base areas.
• Removing withered leaves to promote healthy growth.

While students work, teachers provide real-time education by sharing botanical facts regarding the specific tree species found on-site. This structured approach aims to build a sense of personal responsibility toward the local ecosystem while making nature conservation a routine academic habit.

Incentivizing Schoolroom Sustainability

To maintain high levels of student motivation, the School Education Department has formalized a recognition system. Authorities have ordered 30,000 "Green Badges" to be awarded to pupils who demonstrate exceptional commitment to tree maintenance and environmental stewardship. Officials believe this tangible reward will further solidify the district's goal of raising a generation that values natural preservation as a core duty.
