Ramanathapuram Collector Demands Accelerated Progress on 1,600 MW Uppur Power Project

Assessment of Current Construction and Power Capacity

Ramanathapuram District Collector M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran conducted an on-site evaluation of the Uppur Thermal Power Plant on July 28, 2026. The infrastructure project, carrying a total valuation of ₹12,778 crore, has currently reached a 40 percent completion milestone. Once the facility becomes fully operational, technical briefings indicate it will possess the capacity to generate 1,600 megawatts of electricity per hour.

Land Acquisition and Rail Logistics

Administrative efforts regarding site acquisition have entered their final phases. While all required private land is already secured, the Revenue and Land Administration departments are currently finalizing the transfer of government-owned plots. To sustain the plant's operational requirements, a robust coal supply chain is being established through the following steps:

• Utilization of existing railway corridors connecting Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram.
• Approved administrative sanction to acquire 284 acres for a necessary track extension.
• Direct rail connectivity between Ramanathapuram and the Uppur site, with land acquisition for this spur beginning shortly.

Water Management and Infrastructure Directives

Engineering teams are simultaneously focusing on water transport and drainage systems to prevent local flooding and ensure utility supply. This involves active canal construction through the Naganenthal and Valamavur tanks, designed to facilitate the unobstructed flow of rainwater and drainage away from the industrial zone. Following the inspection, Collector Prabhakaran instructed all departments to intensify their efforts and bypass further delays to meet the project's operational timeline.
