Private Capital Flocks to Advanced Fission

Nuclear energy startup Antares announced a $470 million Series C funding round on Monday, aiming to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) at United States military facilities. This capital injection, comprised of $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt, brings the firm’s total funding to $604 million. Lead investors Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital were joined by participants including Industrious Ventures, Point72 Ventures, and Shine Capital.

This financial momentum reflects an industry-wide trend as investors react to the energy appetite of AI data centers and broader economic electrification. Antares follows other market players like X-energy, which went public with $1 billion in April, and firms such as Radiant Energy, Standard Nuclear, and Last Energy, all of which have secured nine-figure rounds since late last year. Antares previously closed a $96 million Series B in December.

Tactical Micro-Reactors and TRISO Technology

Antares focuses on ultra-portable power units designed to generate between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt. For context, the high end of that range can support approximately 750 households. The company utilizes TRISO fuel—uranium encapsulated in carbon and ceramic spheres the size of billiard balls. This design allows for cooling via helium gas or molten salts and maintains structural integrity at extreme temperatures, offering a safety profile distinct from traditional light-water reactors.

Operational milestones are already mounting. The company's demonstration unit, the Mark-0, achieved criticality on June 4 at the Idaho National Laboratory. Antares plans to have its first power-generating unit operational next year, with full military site deployments scheduled for 2028.

The Military Market and Economic Hurdles

Antares is currently one of three finalists in the Pentagon’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program. This initiative involves testing small reactors at Air Force bases in Montana and Colorado. Targeting the Department of Defense is a strategic move, as the military often prioritizes energy security over the immediate cost-per-megawatt hour.

Economic competitiveness remains a significant obstacle for the SMR sector. Lazard estimates the cost for new SMRs at roughly $214 per megawatt hour, positioning the technology as more expensive than almost all natural gas turbine configurations. While proponents argue that mass manufacturing will eventually drive prices down, analysts suggest these efficiencies may take a decade to emerge. Additional challenges include:

  • An underdeveloped domestic supply chain for advanced nuclear components.
  • Historical difficulties in scaling reactor production beyond prototype phases.
  • Initial units arriving in the early 2030s likely exceeding the price of established power alternatives.
