Paramount Debuts Trailer for Epic Orïsha Adaptation Featuring Mbedu and Davis

A Cinematic Resurrection of West African Myth

Paramount Pictures has officially unveiled the first footage for the film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, the 2018 literary sensation by Tomi Adeyemi. The trailer introduces Thuso Mbedu as the protagonist Zélie Adebola, a young maji fighting to restore mystical forces to the kingdom of Orïsha. The narrative follows Zélie as she navigates a realm where magic users have faced systemic elimination under a brutal monarchy.

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for her work on The Woman King, prioritized physical locations over digital sets to ground the high-fantasy narrative. During the trailer launch, Prince-Bythewood noted that the production utilized the diverse terrains of South Africa and the Canary Islands to ensure a sense of authenticity in the world-building.

High Stakes and a Star-Studded Cast

The adaptation features an ensemble of high-profile talent portraying the key figures of Adeyemi’s trilogy starter:

• Thuso Mbedu leads the cast as Zélie Adebola.
• Viola Davis portrays the mentor figure, Mama Agba.
• Chiwetel Ejiofor and Regina King take on roles as the royal antagonists intent on suppressing magic.
• Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris appear as Princess Amari and Prince Inan, respectively.
• Tosin Cole plays Zélie’s brother, Tzain.
• The production also features Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch in supporting roles.

The film tracks Zélie’s perilous journey alongside an unlikely group of allies as they attempt to spark a rebellion against the oppressive ruling class. Paramount is positioning this release as a major tentpole for the studio, leveraging the global popularity of the source material which blended political allegory with coming-of-age fantasy.

Scheduled for a wide release on January 15, 2027, the movie will be available in standard theaters and IMAX formats. As the first installment of the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy, the project represents a significant investment in diversifying the epic fantasy genre on screen.
