Records Fall in Glasgow 53kg Duel
The 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games witnessed its most competitive weightlifting session on Monday, July 27, when Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih and India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav traded record-breaking lifts. While Yadav delivered a perfect six-for-six performance, Didih’s superior strength secured the gold medal with a 206kg total. This mark, alongside Yadav’s 199kg silver-medal finish, established new benchmarks for the Games and the Commonwealth.
Tactical Battle in Snatch and Clean and Jerk
The contest began with Yadav showing exceptional technical precision. During the snatch phase, the Indian athlete cleared 82kg, 85kg, and 88kg with ease. However, Didih immediately signaled her dominance by setting a new standard with a 93kg snatch, establishing a gap that Yadav would spend the rest of the evening chasing.
As the competition moved to the clean and jerk, the strategy became a high-wire act of escalating weights:
- Yadav opened the second half of the event with a successful 103kg lift, only for Didih to counter with 105kg.
- Advancing to her second attempt, Yadav cleared 107kg, but the Nigerian lifter responded by hoisting 110kg to maintain her lead.
- Yadav finished her flawless run by successfully lifting 111kg on her final attempt, momentarily threatening the top spot.
- Didih solidified her victory with a final 113kg lift, taking the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight records in a single evening.

The 22-year-old Nigerian lifter has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last twelve months. Following a gold medal in the 55kg category at the African Championships in Moka, Mauritius, in 2025, she claimed the 53kg title at the Commonwealth Championships in Ahmedabad later that year. Her performance in Glasgow confirms her status as the leading athlete in her weight class across the Commonwealth.
Despite missing out on the gold, Gyaneshwari Yadav’s debut Games performance was a personal triumph. The Indian lifter noted that her primary goal was to exceed her previous individual marks. Although she acknowledged Didih was a formidable opponent, Yadav remains satisfied with a silver medal and a personal best total on the international stage.
