Multi-Million Rupee Sports Infrastructure Upgrade Unveiled in Virudhunagar

Expanding Athletic Infrastructure in Virudhunagar

A significant expansion of the athletic facilities at the Virudhunagar District Sports Stadium was completed this Tuesday with the inauguration of the Chief Minister’s Youth Sports Arena. Developed with an investment of ₹49.70 crore, the project aligns with a directive from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to steer regional youth toward health-focused activities through modern recreational avenues.

Institutional Oversight and New Features

Industries Minister S. Keerthana and Social Welfare Minister K. Jagadeshwari presided over the opening ceremony, where they participated in a cricket match to mark the occasion. The event saw participation from high-ranking local officials, including:

  • Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra
  • MLAs P. Selvam (Virudhunagar) and A. Karthik (Srivilliputtur)
  • District Sports Officer Kumaramanimaran

The facility enhances a sports complex that already hosts venues for swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The primary addition in this phase is a specialized Box Cricket arena.

Public Access and Booking Protocols

The arena operates daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. To streamline access, the administration has introduced a digital reservation system via the Turf Town mobile application. Residents and sports enthusiasts can secure time slots at a rate of ₹826 per hour. This initiative serves as a structural effort to institutionalize fitness and provide accessible grounds for the younger generation.
