Meta Expands Desktop Capabilities with WhatsApp Web Audio and Video Calling

Native Calling Features Reach the Browser

Meta has removed a long-standing limitation for WhatsApp Web users by integrating native audio and video calling directly into the browser interface. Previously restricted to mobile hardware or dedicated desktop software, the web version now centralizes communication through a dedicated Calls tab. Professional and personal users can access their full call history and preset favorites without switching devices. This expansion maintains feature parity by including screen-sharing capabilities and interactive reactions during active sessions.

Enhanced Control and Connectivity Across Devices

The update introduces a mobility-focused feature allowing users to switch active calls between devices. If a conversation begins on a laptop via the web interface, the user can transfer the session to a smartphone without disconnecting. To improve audio fidelity, WhatsApp integrated background noise suppression to filter ambient sounds in loud environments. Furthermore, video streams will now initiate in high definition immediately, eliminating the latency previously associated with HD resolution switching.

Administrative Tools for Group Management

Recognizing the platform's growing use for professional coordination, Meta introduced waiting rooms for group calls. Hosts can now toggle a Require approval to join setting when generating call links, providing a gatekeeping mechanism to manage participants. Key administrative features include:

• Manual approval for link-based entrants
• Ability to remove participants during active sessions
• Username-based calling functionality, currently in the reservation phase, to facilitate platform-agnostic connections
