Mercedes-Benz Anniversary Convoy Reaches Bengaluru in Global Endurance Circuit

A Transcontinental Tribute to Automotive Origins

An ambitious global expedition titled “140 Years, 140 Places” recently arrived in Bengaluru, marking a major milestone in the history of the modern motor vehicle. Three S-Class sedans, which departed from Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart earlier this year, have already navigated 23 countries across five continents. The convoy commemorates the 1886 patent filing by Carl Benz, the German engineer credited with inventing the first automobile.

Each vehicle in the fleet carries the name of a foundational figure in the company's lineage:

• Carl Benz: The inventor of the world's first motorcar.
• Bertha Benz: Carl’s business partner and wife, who successfully completed the inaugural long-distance road trip of 66 miles in 1888.
• Gottlieb Daimler: The industrial designer who independently constructed the first four-wheeled motorized carriage.

The Strategic Role of Bengaluru

The India leg of the tour saw the “Carl” and “Bertha” saloons visit the Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) facilities at Brigade Tech Gardens and Embassy Crest. This stop serves a dual purpose, as 2024 coincides with MBRDI’s 30th anniversary. Established in 1996, MBRDI has grown into the Group’s largest research and development hub outside Germany, employing over 8,500 specialists in Bengaluru and Pune.

Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI, noted that the arrival of the convoy holds deep meaning for the local workforce. The center provides technical support for global initiatives, specifically focusing on electric mobility, autonomous systems, and connected vehicle technology. After the Bengaluru engagement, the convoy will resume its trek, with a scheduled return to Stuttgart in October.
