Gender-Neutral Framework for Officers
The Ministry of Defence has dismantled legacy gender barriers within the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), establishing a uniform structure for both recruitment and promotion. Under the new policy unveiled by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on July 28, 2026, female officers can now enter the force through both Short Service Appointment (SSA) and Permanent Appointment (PA) streams, matching the entry routes available to men. Conversely, the SSA route has been opened to male candidates to maintain institutional parity.
This structural change extends beyond recruitment into the total career lifecycle. Key provisions include:
- Promotion Equality: Currently serving female officers with Permanent Appointments are now eligible for elevation to higher ranks based on standard performance metrics.
- Status Conversion: Women serving under the SSA scheme gain the right to transition to Permanent Appointments upon meeting specific eligibility requirements.
- Unified Training: The policy guarantees that career advancement opportunities remain identical from the initial training phase through to senior leadership roles.
Accelerated Relief for Bereaved Families
In a move to resolve administrative bottlenecks, the Ministry has overhauled the process for granting benefits to families of personnel who vanish during maritime operations. The new mechanism empowers competent authorities to formally declare missing personnel as "presumed dead" specifically to trigger the release of terminal benefits and ex-gratia compensation. This change aims to eliminate the lengthy delays that previously left families in financial limbo while waiting for official death certifications.

The announcements, made at Kartavya Bhavan-2 in New Delhi, were attended by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani. Rajnath Singh framed these updates as essential steps toward the ICG's 2027 Swarnim Jayanti (Golden Jubilee).
