Previous winners Marlon James and Douglas Stuart return to the 13-novel semifinalist list alongside Pulitzer laureate Elizabeth Strout. The jury selected these titles from 163 submissions, highlighting works that span from gritty Dublin thrillers to post-apocalyptic sci-fi.
Diversity and Risk Defining the 2026 Selection
Panellists for the 2026 Booker Prize have narrowed a field of 163 submissions down to a 13-novel longlist described as literary “dynamite.” Mary Beard, the historian leading the judging panel, noted that the selected works intentionally move away from the image of the “typical” Booker winner as a serious, classic-in-waiting. Instead, the jury prioritized risk-taking narratives that challenge readers to view the world through humor, pathos, and shock.
Established Titans Return to the Fray
The semifinalist list, announced on July 28, 2026, features three heavyweights of modern literature. Marlon James, the 2015 winner for A Brief History of Seven Killings, returns with The Disappearers, an exploration of gay life in 1980s Jamaica. Douglas Stuart, who secured the 2020 prize for Shuggie Bain, is nominated for John of John, a narrative centered on father-son secrets on a secluded Scottish island. Joining them is Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout with her New England-based story, The Things We Never Say.
Breaking New Ground and Genre Boundaries
The £50,000 ($66,000) award remains open to any novel published in the U.K. and Ireland, and this year's list reflects a global reach with authors from Mexico, Turkey, Ireland, Britain, and the U.S. Notably, the selection includes voices across a massive age gap and various genres:
- Djamel White: The youngest contender at 28, nominated for the Dublin-based underworld thriller All Them Dogs.
- M. John Harrison: The oldest nominee at 81, whose sci-fi entry The End of Everything presents a rare dystopian inclusion for the prize.
- Kenan Orhan and Rebecca Perry: Featured as debut authors for The Renovation and May We Feed the King respectively.
The remaining contenders rounding out the 13 are Chloe Aridjis (The Shadow of the Object), Luke Kennard (Black Bag), Missouri Williams (The Vivisectors), Emma Cline (Switzy), Makenna Goodman (Helen of Nowhere), and Gwendoline Riley (The Palm House).
The Road to London
Working alongside Beard are jurors including Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker and novelist Patricia Lockwood. This group aims to find a successor to the 2025 winner, David Szalay’s Flesh. The current list will be trimmed to six finalists on September 22, 2026, with the ultimate winner scheduled for a London announcement on November 9.
