Financial Audits Expose Educator Involvement
In a significant escalation of 'Operation Toofan,' the Kozhikode Rural police arrested V.P. Neeshma, 30, on July 28. Neeshma, a specialist teacher at the Perambra Block Resource Centre (BRC), was taken into custody following an interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Vadakara. Investigators identified her after financial audits surfaced large sums of money in her bank account, which police believe are direct proceeds from synthetic drug sales.
Neeshma’s arrest follows the prior detention of two of her close associates: K.C. Keerthana, a specialist sports instructor at Perambra BRC, and K. Kavya, a teacher at the Cheruvallur School Autism Centre. The District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) claims the trio functioned as key intermediaries for synthetic drug dealers, utilizing Instagram to source clients and facilitate MDMA transactions.
The Irony of Anti-Narcotics Participation
The case has drawn sharp criticism due to the suspects' roles in public service. Keerthana, specifically, had been a visible figure in official anti-drug initiatives, leading Zumba workshops for youth awareness programs. Despite this public stance, police investigations reveal that the three teachers were not only distributing MDMA but were active consumers themselves. Locals and student activists alleged that previous complaints regarding one instructor smoking during training sessions were ignored by administrators.
Administrative Consequences and Regional Impact
- Employment Termination: Following orders from the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) State Project Directorate, the Education department dismissed Keerthana and Kavya. Similar proceedings for Neeshma are currently in progress.
- Public Outcry: Local residents and activists have staged protests outside the Perambra BRC, demanding a rigorous audit of educational staff across the district.
- Interstate Links: SIT lead Inspector A.V. Dinesh confirmed that the investigation is expanding to uncover ties between these instructors and a larger interstate drug syndicate operating across north Kerala.
District Police Chief Merin Joseph established the SIT to dismantle the network entirely. Inspector Dinesh indicated that more individuals associated with the distribution ring are expected to be taken into custody as the audit of digital and financial records continues.
