The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded warning levels to an orange alert for Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode districts on Thursday, July 30, 2026. This classification signals a high probability of intense and heavy rainfall events within these northern territories.

Meteorologists attribute this atmospheric shift to a deep depression currently positioned over central Chhattisgarh and the northern interior of Odisha. This system has energized monsoon currents, prompting broader safety alerts across the state. While the northern districts remain the primary focus on Thursday, a yellow alert covers the majority of Kerala, with the exceptions of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha.

Extended Outlook and Shift to Southern Districts

The IMD has projected a sustained period of heavy precipitation lasting at least four days. The risk profile shifts geographically as the week progresses:

• Friday, July 31: Orange alerts expand to include Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki, with the rest of the state under a yellow alert.
• Saturday, August 1: The heavy rain belt moves south. Seven districts ranging from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam will be under an orange alert.
• Statewide Coverage: Areas not under orange alerts during this period remain under yellow alerts, signifying isolated but significant rainfall potential.

Emergency management officials and local residents are advised to monitor updates closely as the depression continues to influence regional weather dynamics through the beginning of August.
