Kerala Health Minister Flags Off Orthopaedic Awareness Walkathon in Trivandrum
Medical associations launched a series of public health initiatives in Kerala to mark National Bone and Joint Day. The campaign included a mass walkathon and specialized medical screenings for students and law enforcement.
Strategic Health Outreach Marks National Bone and Joint Day
The Kerala Orthopaedic Association (KOA) and the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) joined forces with the Trivandrum Orthopaedic Society (TOS) on July 27, 2026, to execute a multifaceted public health campaign. Health Minister K. Muraleedharan inaugurated the primary event, a Bone & Joint Health Walkathon that spanned the route from Kowdiar Junction to the Museum grounds. This public demonstration served as a visible centerpiece for a broader clinical and educational effort aimed at reducing musculoskeletal disorders in the region.
Targeted Training and Early Intervention Initiatives
Beyond the public march, organizers implemented technical training and diagnostic screenings to address specific health risks across different demographics. The TOS led several high-impact sessions including:
- Emergency Response: Approximately 400 SAP Commandos received Basic Life Support (BLS) training at the SAP Police Camp in Peroorkada.
- Pediatric Screening: Experts conducted spine screening surveys in local schools to identify spinal deformities in students at treatable stages.
- Public Education: Clinical specialists delivered lectures on the prevention and early management of low back pain, alongside dedicated talks regarding osteoporosis risks.
By focusing on both physical activity and preventative diagnostics, the associations sought to shift public focus toward early detection and proactive bone health management.
