Kerala Government Moves to Compensate Adimaly Mudslide Victims Before Season Festival

Financial Relief for Displaced Idukki Families

Revenue Minister A.P. Anilkumar announced on Monday that the state government will provide ₹10 lakh in compensation to families impacted by the Adimaly mudslide. This disbursement is scheduled to conclude before the Onam festival. The decision follows a review meeting at the Idukki Collectorate and addresses demands from 17 families who have staged a month-long protest for equitable state support.

Tragedy and the Path to Policy Change

The crisis originated on the night of October 25, 2025, when a severe mudslide struck Koompanpara on the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway. The event resulted in the death of Biju, a resident of the Laksham Veedu Colony. His wife, Sandhya, sustained grave injuries that led to the amputation of her left leg on October 28, 2025. Following the disaster, the Revenue Department flagged 27 families residing in high-risk zones. While nine homes were destroyed immediately, others were deemed uninhabitable due to the threat of further soil instability.

Addressing the Rent Arrears and Compensation Disparity

Displaced residents were shifted to rented housing under a government promise of ₹15,000 monthly assistance. However, chronic delays in these payments triggered the recent demonstrations. The new compensation package aligns the 17 families currently in at-risk homes with those whose properties were totally demolished, who previously received ₹10 lakh. This move implements a specific recommendation submitted by the District Collector to resolve the ongoing humanitarian standoff.
