Kargil Vijay Diwas: Karnataka CM Asserts Military Sacrifice as Bedrock of State Security

A Legacy of Himalayan Defense
Marking the 27th anniversary of the victory in Kargil, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar paid homage to the fallen at the National Military Memorial near the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The Chief Minister described the success of the 1999 campaign as the triumph of the national flag in the Himalayas, noting that the victory over enemy forces remains a primary source of national pride and security.
Of the 527 Indian soldiers martyred during the conflict, 13 hailed from Karnataka. Shivakumar noted that these individuals, along with those who served in the Indo-Pak and Indo-China wars, provide the guard that allows citizens to live in peace. He characterized the contributions of soldiers, alongside youth, women, farmers, and taxpayers, as the five integral facets forming the nation's collective strength.
The Industrial Backbone of National Defense
The Chief Minister positioned Karnataka as the central hub of India’s military-industrial complex. During his address, he highlighted several Bengaluru-based institutions that sustain the country's technological edge, including:
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL)
- Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)
- DRDO, ISRO, and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA)
Invoking the history of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the nation's first Commander-in-Chief, Shivakumar argued that the state serves as a backbone for the entire defense ecosystem.
Welfare Commitments for Service Families
Addressing the thousands of military families residing in Karnataka, the Chief Minister issued an open invitation for policy suggestions to improve the welfare of both serving and retired personnel. He stated that the state government is prepared to review and implement new proposals to support these families, emphasizing that the freedom earned through sacrifice must be defended against both external and internal threats.
