In response to forecasts suggesting a below-normal southwest monsoon driven by the El Nino phenomenon, Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap has formally advised regional farmers to secure their horticulture investments. The initiative aims to provide a financial safety net for those cultivating banana and tapioca during the current kuruvai season, ensuring that unpredictable weather does not liquidate agricultural livelihoods. These specific crops have been formally notified under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).

Registration Protocols and Deadlines

The enrollment window opened on July 25, 2026, providing several channels for farmers to register their crops. Applications are accepted through Primary Agricultural Credit Cooperative Societies, nationalized banks, and common e-service centers. Producers may also utilize the National Crop Insurance portal directly. The final deadline to complete the insurance process for both banana and tapioca is September 15, 2026.

Comprehensive Coverage Scope

The insurance scheme offers a multifaceted buffer against various agricultural disruptions. Enrolled farmers gain eligibility for compensation under several categories:

• Losses resulting from prevented sowing or planting.
