Regional Connectivity Imbalance

State planning for the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram reveals a distinct geographical priority. The Andhra Pradesh government has successfully developed seven access routes connecting Visakhapatnam to the National Highway 16 site, yet dedicated infrastructure for Vizianagaram sits stalled in a secondary phase. Current plans by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) highlight the Ice Factory Junction-Dharmapuri-Chintalavalasa-Bhogapuram corridor as a primary link. Despite its inclusion in the master plan, a lack of funding has prevented the VMRDA from initiating construction.

Gridlock on Existing Arteries

Without new dedicated roads, commuters must rely on the heavily burdened Vizianagaram-Denkada-Natavalasa-Bhogapuram route. This corridor serves as the sole connection for travelers heading to Srikakulam and handles significant industrial traffic, including hundreds of buses from regional pharmaceutical firms. These conditions result in significant delays:

• The 12 km stretch from Vizianagaram’s center to Denkada currently requires at least 30 minutes of travel time.
• Daily traffic jams affect passengers arriving from Parvatipuram, Bobbili, and Salur in Andhra Pradesh.
• Travelers from Odisha face similar bottlenecks as they navigate these narrow existing passages.

Government Response and Alternate Routes

While the Raipur-Visakhapatnam highway offers a potential alternative, the increased mileage makes it an unpopular choice for those heading to the airport. Addressing these concerns, MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas and I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy stated that dedicated roads for the Vizianagaram region will begin soon. Srinivas clarified that the initial focus on Visakhapatnam was necessitated by the planned closure of its current airport, which will force all local air traffic to Bhogapuram.
