Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has issued a formal advisory to protect citizens from sophisticated cybercriminals targeting the Indiramma Towers housing scheme. As the government begins collecting the ₹10,000 earnest money deposit (EMD) from eligible participants, bad actors are attempting to intercept these funds through various digital deceptions. Commissioner Sajjanar clarified that the selection protocol operates with total transparency, leaving zero room for middlemen or brokers to influence the outcome.
Tactics Used by Cybercriminals
Investigation reveals that fraudsters are deploying several methods to compromise applicant data and bank accounts. The public is warned to watch for the following threats:
- Phishing and Malware: Scammers distribute malicious links via SMS or WhatsApp. Clicking these or downloading unsolicited APK files can grant attackers complete control over a mobile device.
- Remote Access Tools: Fraudsters often persuade victims to install screen-sharing software like TeamViewer or AnyDesk to steal banking credentials under the guise of technical assistance.
- False Urgency: Applicants are being threatened with the cancellation of their benefits unless immediate payments are made, a tactic designed to bypass critical thinking.
- Counterfeit Portals: Criminals have developed replica government websites to harvest Aadhaar numbers and bank details.
Financial Safeguards and Red Flags
Commissioner Sajjanar emphasized that the ₹10,000 earnest money deposit is fully refundable via the original payment method if an applicant is not selected for a home. He reminded residents that receiving a refund never requires entering a UPI PIN; this code is only utilized for sending funds. Sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs), bank account numbers, or Aadhaar information with unknown individuals remains a primary risk factor for financial loss.

For legitimate inquiries regarding the housing program, the state has established a dedicated helpline at 040-24603572. In the event of a successful digital theft, victims must act within the “golden hour” by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or filing a report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
