Fatal Blast Uncovers Clandestine Manufacturing Operation
A violent explosion at an unauthorized fireworks unit near Sengamalapatti in Sivakasi claimed the lives of two workers and left a third in critical condition on Sunday morning. The blast occurred around 8:30 a.m., sending white smoke visible for kilometers and shattering windows of nearby residences. One victim, identified as 36-year-old R. Ramprakash, died at the scene, while his brother, R. Ramachandran, 38, was transported to Virudhunagar Government Medical College hospital with 75% burns. The identity of a second deceased individual remains unconfirmed.
Evidence of High-Velocity Impact
The force of the detonation was so severe that one victim was found dismembered, while the other was located charred inside the facility. Vehicle fragments from a van parked at the site were discovered 20 meters away, and a two-wheeler was significantly damaged by the subsequent fire. Station Officer T. Seenivasan led the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services in a prolonged operation to contain the blaze and secure the area.
Investigation into Illegal Industrial Activity
Authorities revealed that the shed, owned by the brothers, utilized free agricultural electricity to power their nocturnal manufacturing sessions, which reportedly began at 3 a.m. that day. Neighbors noted they believed the site was a plant nursery. Key findings include:
- Drone Searches: Emergency responders deployed drones to scout surrounding farmland for two individuals reported missing by relatives.
- Well Drainage: Firemen began pumping water from a nearby irrigation well to check if the blast threw workers into the depths.
- Enforcement Action: Virudhunagar MLA P. Selvam noted that 10 similar illegal units have been dismantled by Sivakasi East police in recent weeks.
Secondary Fire at Licensed Unit
In a separate incident less than an hour later, a fire broke out at the Jai Vinayaka Sparklers unit in Pernaickenpatti. Because the facility was closed for Sunday, no casualties occurred. Preliminary assessments by the Sivakasi fire station suggest a short circuit ignited packing materials and storage boxes at this licensed location.
