Grid Stability Mandates Cut 8,133 GWh of Solar Output During First Quarter

Transmission Gaps Force Energy Restrictions

Government data reveals that grid operators deliberately limited the output of solar facilities by 8,133 gigawatt-hours (GWh) during the first quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year. Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, presented these figures to Parliament, citing reports from the Grid Controller of India. The administration attributed these restrictions to an infrastructure mismatch where renewable energy generation sites are commissioned faster than the necessary transmission lines can be established.

Maintaining grid security requires balancing supply and demand in real-time. When transmission capacity fails to keep pace with production, operators must implement curtailment. The monthly breakdown of restricted solar energy includes:

• April: 2,417 GWh
• May: 3,235 GWh
• June: 2,481 GWh

National Solar Capacity Audit

As of June 30, India’s total installed solar capacity reached 162.15 GW. This fleet comprises diverse generation sources, dominated by 125.6 GW from utility-scale projects. Rooftop solar installations account for 30.11 GW, while off-grid projects contribute 6.43 GW to the national total. These figures highlight the scale of the power surge that the current transmission network must integrate.

Rooftop Adoption Surges via PM Surya Ghar

While utility-scale projects faced restrictions, the PM Surya Ghar initiative reported substantial growth since its February 2024 launch. By July 22, the program attracted over 75 lakh applications. Current data indicates that more than 39.7 lakh rooftop solar systems are operational, representing an aggregate capacity of 14,180.90 MW. The government has disbursed approximately ₹27,343.9 crore in Central Financial Assistance to support over 48 lakh households in this transition.
