Goa Police Apprehend Protesters After Display of Support for Activist Umar Khalid
Authorities in Panaji detained two individuals on Saturday following a public demonstration favoring jailed activist Umar Khalid. The incidents occurred during a political gathering at Azad Maidan, leading to a standoff at the local police headquarters.
Detentions at Azad Maidan
Panaji police took two young men into custody on July 25 during a public gathering at Azad Maidan. The incident began when an individual identified as Danish displayed a placard advocating for the release of Umar Khalid. Khalid is currently imprisoned in connection with the 2020 Delhi riot investigation. Danish's demonstration took place amidst a celebration marking the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, an event linked to nationwide protests over the NEET examination leaks.
Escalation and Second Arrest
The situation intensified when Danish declined to provide his identity to a senior officer at the scene, resulting in his immediate detention. In response, members of the Cockroach Janta Party and other protesters marched toward the Police Headquarters to demand his release. As the crowd chanted slogans, a second individual, Sudin Dalvi, was apprehended by law enforcement after he also voiced support for Khalid's cause. Police officials confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) is being prepared against both men.
Political Reactions and Legal Pressure
The detentions triggered a counter-protest from the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Led by Goa president Tushar Kelkar, BJYM members gathered outside the Panaji police station to demand severe legal consequences for the detainees. Kelkar has called for the registration of non-bailable offences, characterizing the support for Khalid as an anti-national act. The developments highlight the ongoing friction surrounding Khalid's legal status and the limits of political expression in the state.
