A judicial crackdown on educational corruption culminated Monday as the Principal District Judge Court in Ranipet handed down prison sentences to two high-ranking officials of the Vitva Ratna Villa Government-Aided Primary School. The legal action follows a lengthy investigation into the systemic fabrication of student data meant to siphon resources from the state exchequer.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) initiated the probe following a surprise joint inspection with the Inspection Cell on August 27, 2012. Investigators discovered that the institution’s correspondent, Karunagara Sanjeev Doss, and the headmistress, Alice Thabitha Vijay Kumari, manipulated school records to create a facade of high enrollment. While the actual number of students was significantly lower, the official ledger falsely listed 259 pupils, including 187 individuals who did not exist.
Financial Impact and Sentencing
This artificial inflation of the student body allowed the administrators to secure unauthorized government perks. By pretending to serve a larger population, the school obtained:
- Six additional teaching positions that were not justified by actual enrollment.
- Salary disbursements for redundant staff totaling ₹4,67,121.
- Misallocated noon meal provisions valued at ₹2,762.
The total financial damage to the state treasury exceeded ₹469,000. Under the court's final ruling, both defendants received four-year terms of rigorous imprisonment. The court also ordered Karunagara Sanjeev Doss to pay a fine of ₹35,000, while Alice Thabitha Vijay Kumari faces a ₹40,000 penalty for her role in the documentation fraud.
