Former TMC Bloc Joins NDA High-Level Strategy Session as NCPI Identity Awaits Recognition
Twenty parliamentarians who defected from the Trinamool Congress recently attended their inaugural NDA strategy session in New Delhi. The group, now flying the Nationalist Citizens Party of India banner, focused on legislative agendas and trade policy during the ministerial briefing.
Integration of NCPI into the Ruling Alliance
A contingent of 20 Lok Sabha members, previously part of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), formally participated in their first National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary meeting on July 28, 2026. This gathering, titled Mangal Milan, took place at the G.M.C. Balayogi Auditorium within the Parliament Library Building. The group recently abandoned the TMC to form the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), shifting their political allegiance to the BJP-led coalition despite the fact that Speaker Om Birla has yet to officially recognize the NCPI as a formal parliamentary bloc.
Legislative Priorities and the Paper Leak Crisis
The meeting occurred against a backdrop of significant domestic pressure following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Education Minister initiated by the NEET exam irregularities. During the session, lawmakers addressed the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill 2026, which was introduced the previous day. MP Sayoni Ghosh expressed support for the bill, emphasizing the need for legislative action to address education sector grievances.
Trade and Sectoral Policy Briefings
Senior Union Ministers, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, J.P. Nadda, and Nitin Gadkari, oversaw presentations regarding national economic progress. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the session, he did not deliver a formal speech. Instead, the agenda focused on technical briefings regarding:
- Free Trade Agreements (FTAs): Lawmakers analyzed data on international commerce to relay to their constituents.
- Fisheries and Agriculture: Union Minister Shantanu Thakur and MP Naresh Mhaske confirmed extensive discussions regarding development benchmarks in the fisheries sector.
- Farmers' Welfare: Representative Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar noted that the data provided would help explain national growth trajectories to local farming communities.
MP Satabdi Roy characterized the organized nature of the NDA briefing as a departure from past experiences, noting the systematic approach to informing coalition members about upcoming legislative business. Although the 20 MPs now sit away from their former TMC colleagues in the Lok Sabha, the formal structural status of the NCPI remains in a state of procedural transition.
