Former Perplexity Engineer Secures $5.7M for Agent-Driven Knowledge Work Browser
Startup Polar has raised seed funding to launch a specialized browser targeting professional automation rather than the general consumer market. Led by Kevin Jiang, the platform focuses on streamlining complex workflows for sales, recruitment, and research.
A Shift from Consumer Chat to Professional Automation
The landscape of AI-integrated web browsers is undergoing a rapid transformation. While 2025 saw a surge of consumer-facing tools like OpenAI’s Atlas and The Browser Company’s Dia, many struggled to maintain long-term user retention. Critics and industry insiders note that general tasks like flight booking were too infrequent to drive daily habit. Polar CEO Kevin Jiang, a veteran of Perplexity’s Comet team, argues that the real value of browser-based AI lies in repetitive professional operations rather than occasional consumer queries.
Targeting the Knowledge Economy
Polar differentiates itself by focusing specifically on knowledge workers in sectors like marketing, business operations, and recruitment. Instead of merely chatting with tabs, users can manage complex automated workflows. Key features of the platform include:
- Scheduling recurring professional workflows.
- Saving and deploying custom prompts across multiple sites.
- Assigning specific operational tasks to browser-based agents.
- Leveraging existing login sessions to perform actions within restricted web environments.
The company reports that many early adopters currently utilize Polar as a secondary tool specifically for automation while maintaining their legacy browsers for standard navigation. However, the startup views the browser as the most effective entry point for reliability, as it capitalizes on the user being already authenticated across various web services.
Strategic Funding and Market Position
The startup recently closed a $5.7 million seed round led by Madrona. The investment group highlighted the scale of the automation market for professional tasks and the technical advantages of building a dedicated browser. According to Madrona partner Sabrina Albert, the browser interface provides unique insights into user interaction that external tools lack. The funding round attracted several prominent industry figures, including:
- Thomas Dohmke, former CEO of GitHub.
- Phoebe Gates, founder of Phia.
- Erik Bernhardsson, CEO of Modal.
- Rob Wachen, co-founder of Etched.
- Robert Yang, CEO of Fundamental Research Labs.
Polar operates on a freemium model. While the basic browser remains free with a limited daily credit allocation for AI tasks, professional tiers aimed at power users start at $20 per month. Looking ahead, Jiang has indicated that the company may eventually expand beyond the browser into broader computer-use automation.
